What is a Dynamic UPS?

Dynamic UPS systems are driven by kinetic energy with electrical rotating machines providing the output voltage. They provide an “infinite” back-up power supply using diesel engines.

This is a fundamentally different approach to static UPS systems which provide the output voltage via power electronic devices with batteries providing the reserve energy.

Static UPS provide a back-up power supply determined by the autonomy time of the batteries; on battery depletion, a separate standby diesel generator set is called upon to continue providing backup power. Recharging the batteries fully will take several hours resulting in reduced autonomy in the interim.

Compared to Dynamic UPS systems, static UPS tend to be more economical at lower power ratings when considering only the unit and batteries. But at medium and higher power ratings, Dynamic UPS systems are more cost-effective based on the initial investment, reduced consumable electricity cost and maintenance.

Smaller footprint

Its component count and monobloc structure give the KINOLT KS® a compact design, reducing its footprint to 40% of an equivalently rated battery UPS system – making it the smallest in the market. This reduces building construction costs or increases space for production and revenue-driving functions.

Not having to incorporate the supporting auxiliary HVAC cooling and ventilation equipment associated with static UPS battery rooms or even complex power distribution systems also needs to be considered.

Units up to 3000 kVA

Static UPS systems are made up of a series of electronic components; when connected together they typically offer ratings up to 800 kVA. On sites requiring significant UPS capability, the component count when using static UPS systems can be significant as multiple UPS units must be incorporated.

Dynamic UPS modules are not limited by the current carrying capability of electronic components; their per unit ratings are considerably greater leading to a much-lower component count on higher power installations.

As any designer will tell you, a lower component count leads to a higher level of reliability.

Medium Voltage Systems

The perfect solution for medium voltage critical loads or for when larger distribution distances need to be covered. In both cases, an installation cost saving on low voltage cabling can be made as the quantity required will be less.

When operating multiple systems in parallel, design limitations from the increasing combined currents become apparent; this is easily overcome by increasing the voltage to 3, 6, 13 or 22 kV, for example.

Compared to static UPS systems that require heavy lead-acid batteries and generate tons of chemical waste, a Dynamic UPS solution will give you optimal sustainability without harmful or significant waste.

For instance, a 2000 kVA KINOLT KS®might require its bearings to be replaced after 10 years. Depending on the application, it generates around 240 kg of steel waste. In comparison, after 6 years, a corresponding static UPS system would require replacement of 500,000 kg of batteries.
